  16. Using Aware
  17. ===========
  18. Aware is a video player specifically designed for the Motion Pixels
  19. codec.  There are two versions of Aware, 16-bit and 32-bit.  The
  20. 16-bit version of Aware runs under Windows 3.1 and Windows for
  21. Workgroups 3.11.  The 32-bit version is designed for the Windows 95
  22. operating system.

  24. All the functions described are applicable to the Motion Pixels'
  25. Remote Control.

  28. Launching Aware in Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11
  29. =============================================================
  30. In the Windows Program Manager, select "File", then "Run".
  31.  
  32. In the Command Line dialog box, type "C:\MPIXELS\AWARE16.EXE",
  33. then click "OK!".
  34.  
  35. If Motion Pixels was installed into a different directory, click on
  36. the "Browse" button and select the appropriate directory.
  37.  
  38. The Aware toolbar will pop up.  See the "Loading A Video Clip"
  39. section of this documentation for further information.

  42. Launching Aware in Windows 95
  43. =============================
  44. In the Windows 95 taskbar, click on the Start Menu, then select
  45. "Run".
  46.  
  47. In the Run dialog box, type "C:\MPIXELS\AWARE32.EXE".  If Motion
  48. Pixels has been installed into a different directory, type in the
  49. appropriate path and filename.

  51. The Aware toolbar will pop up.  See the "Loading A Video Clip"
  52. section of this documentation for further information.

  55. Loading A Video Clip
  56. ====================
  57. To load a video clip into the Aware program, select "File" in the
  58. toolbar, then "Open Video".
  59.  
  60. In the Open dialog box, select the desired video clip from the CD or
  61. use "Look In" function to browse the directories.  Click on a file
  62. with the .AVI file extension. 
  63.  
  64. The first frame of the video clip will load into the window.  The
  65. filename of the video clip is displayed in the titlebar at the top of
  66. the window.  To play the video in the original-sized window,click on
  67. the play arrow in the lower left-hand corner or press CTRL+P on the
  68. keyboard.  Use the slider bar to advance through the video frames.
  69. To play in the video in a window using the MovieCD program, click on
  70. the green Play button on the Motion Pixels Remote Control.

  72. The video segment can be play directly in a window or in fullscreen
  73. mode.  There are several playback options available, accessible through
  74. the Playback Style dialog box.  To open this dialog box, select "File"
  75. in the toolbar, then Playback Style or press CTRL+L on the keyboard.
  76. In the MovieCD program, click on the Playback Style on the Motion
  77. Pixels Remote Control.

  79. The MVI Aware Configuration dialog box contains 13 different options
  80. for playing the video in a window or fullscreen.Below contains a
  81. detailed explanation of the Motion Pixels resizing techniques.
  82.  
  83. Each resizing technique can be applied to either the fullscreen or
  84. windowed enlargement styles.
  85.  
  86. The default Minimum Fullscreen Resolution is 640x480 pixels.
  87. The default Windowed Enlargement Style is None.
  88. The default Fullscreen Enlargement Style is 4x Hicolor Horizontal
  89. Lines.
  90.  
  91. The Windowed Enlargement Styles that are grayed out become available
  92. when the desktop color palette is set to 256 colors.
  93.  
  94. Any of the Windowed or Fullscreen Enlargement Styles may be used,
  95. although some video adapters may not support all playback modes.

  98. Motion Pixels (MVI) Playback Style Configuration - Resizing Options
  99. ===================================================================
  100.  
  101. 32k\64k (Hicolor) Methods
  102. -------------------------
  103. No Enlargement        Video retains its original (captured) size.    
  104. Single Field        Video retains its original size, but odd fields
  105.                         are removed for fastest playback.  Use this
  106.                         mode on slower computers to improve playback
  107.                         performance.    
  108. Wide Field Lines    Video plays back at twice the horizontal
  109.                         resolution.  This mode is similar to single-
  110.                         field, but doubles the vertical pixels.    
  111. 4x Pixel Enlargement    Video plays back four times its original size
  112.                         in 32,768 colors (regardless of video adapter).    
  113. 4x Horizontal Lines    Video plays back four times its original size
  114.                         in 32,768 colors (regardless of video adapter),
  115.                         providing horizontal color enhancement.    
  116. 4x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back four times its original size
  117.                         in 32,768 colors (regardless of video adapter).
  118.                         Antialiasing smoothes an image which contains
  119.                         areas of high contrast.    
  120. 9x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back nine times its original size.

  123. 256 Color (Palletized) Methods
  124. ------------------------------
  125. 4x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back in 256 colors at 4 times its 
  126.                         original size with improved playback
  127.                         performance compared to 4xHiColor mode.
  128.                         Antialiasing smoothes an image which contains
  129.                         areas of high contrast.    
  130. 9x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back in 256 colors at 9 times its 
  131.                         original size.  Works well for 160x120 video
  132.                         clips.

  135. 256 Color (Grayscale) Methods
  136. -----------------------------    
  137. No Enlargement        Video plays back at original size in black
  138.                         and white
  139. 4x Pixel Enlargement    Video plays back at 4 times original size in
  140.                         black and white.    
  141. 4x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back at 4 times original size in
  142.                         black and white.  Antialiasing smoothes an
  143.                         image which contains areas of high contrast.    
  144. 9x Pattern Enlargement    Video plays back at 9 times original size in
  145.                         black and white.

  148. Use Hardware Scaling (if available)
  149. -----------------------------------
  150. Hardware scaling enables the video window to be resized to any
  151. dimensions.  If a video adapter (i.e. Weitek) has video acceleration
  152. capabilities, the video in a window will play much faster.  Checking
  153. this option disables all other video resizing techniques in a window.

  157. The Advanced Options section allows the user to fine-tune the Motion
  158. Pixels performance:
  159. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  160. The "Optimize For No Cache" checkbox should be selected for computers
  161. that have 128Kb of level two (L2) cache or less.
  162.  
  163. Motion Pixels uses the standard Windows AVI video file format.
  164. Selecting the "Disable Auto-Resizing"  allows the video to be resized
  165. or "stretched" in another application such as Media Player.
  166.  
  167. "Save Video State" ensures the Windows desktop is not corrupted after
  168. playing the video fullscreen at the expense of a small amount of
  169. video memory.
  170.  
  171. "Maximum Video Quality" smoothes out blocky areas of video that
  172. contains massive amounts of blue.  This function is extremely CPU-
  173. intensive.  A Pentium 100Mhz or higher is recommended.
  174.  
  175. "Disable Linear Video" renables bank-switching for video adapters
  176. that may use VESA 2.0 drivers.  Use this function if full-screen
  177. video playback does not work correctly.
  178.  
  179. If the video adapter chipset is not known, pressing the "Detect
  180. Video Chipset" button will perform a diagnostic routine to determine
  181. the chipset type.  The "Automatically Detect" option is selected by
  182. default.  Under normal circumstances, it will not be necessary to
  183. change this setting.

  187. Player Options
  188. ==============
  189. Motion Pixels offers several other options for video playback. In
  190. the "File" menu in the Aware toolbar, select "Player Options", click
  191. the "Options" button on the Remote Control or press CTRL+T on the
  192. keyboard to access the Playback Options.  Click on "OK" when
  193. completed.

  195. The Rewind/Fast Forward speed can be adjusted from 2.5 times
  196. original speed up to "Fast As
